Research over the past 20 years indicates that the stimulation exerted by an acupuncture needle triggers the release of prostaglandins which stimulate production of chemicals in the nerve endings which in turn transmit a message to the hypothalamus. Located at the base of the brain, the hypothalamus is the regulatory center for all hormonal activity. It controls the discharge of gonadotropin releasing hormones which govern ovulation, menstruation and pregnancy.

Balancing hypothalamic function and regulating the release of hormonal substances with acupuncture addresses many of the causes of infertility.
